2 death sentences given in China milk scandal

SHIJIAZHUANG, China – A Chinese court condemned two men to death Thursday and handed a life term to a former dairy boss in the first sentences for those involved in the country's contaminated milk scandal.

The Intermediate People's Court in Shijiazhuang gave the life sentence to Tian Wenhua, 66, the former general manager and chairwoman of Sanlu Group Co., the dairy at the center of the crisis. She was the highest-ranking official charged in the food safety scandal, widely seen as a national disgrace that highlighted corporate and official shortcomings and corruption.

At her trial at the end of December Tian pleaded guilty to charges of producing and selling fake or substandard products after infant formula tainted with the chemical melamine was blamed in the deaths of at least six babies and the illnesses of nearly 300,000 others.

The court also sentenced Zhang Yujun, 40, to death for running a workshop that was allegedly China's largest source of melamine, said spokesman Wang Wei. A second man, Geng Jinping, was also given the death penalty for producing and selling toxic food.

Zheng Shuzhen, from Henan province, said her 1-year-old granddaughter died in June after drinking Sanlu milk.

"I've run out of tears. ... That's why I came today. Even if (Tian) dies a hundred times over, it won't lessen our hate," Zheng said.

A total of 21 defendants were being sentenced Thursday in connection with the case.

Two men, including 24-year-old Zhang Yanzhang, were sentenced to life imprisonment for endangering public safety. Zhang Yanzhang was accused of working with Zhang Yujun.

Three other former Sanlu executives were given between five years and 15 years in prison.

The sentences were read out by Wang outside the court, where families of babies sickened in the scandal had anxiously gathered.

In a reflection of the trial's sensitivity, dozens of policers officers guarded the courthouse and cordoned off the surrounding area with plastic barriers. Officers told the victims' families to keep about 100 yards (meters) away.

Sanlu, along with the other 21 dairy companies involved in the scandal, have proposed a 1.1 billion yuan ($160 million) compensation plan. More than 200 families have filed suit demanding higher compensation and long-term treatment for their babies.

Zhao Lianhai, who has set up a Web site to help organize parents whose children were sickened, said about a dozen parents from across the country had hoped to attend the sentencing but only seven showed up.

Authorities detained at least two sets of parents of melamine victims as they attempted to travel to the courthouse, said Li Fangping, a Beijing lawyer who has worked with the parents since news of the poisonings emerged.

Dong Shiliang, from southern Yunnan province, was stopped from boarding a plane in Kunming on Wednesday while Liu Donglin was being held at a Beijing police station, he said.

During her Dec. 31 trial, Tian admitted she had known of problems with her company's products for months before informing authorities. The scandal was exposed in September.

Investigations showed that middlemen who sold milk to dairy companies were watering down raw milk, then mixing in nitrogen-rich melamine to fool quality tests for protein content.

Normally used to make plastics and fertilizer, melamine can cause kidney stones and kidney failure when ingested in large amounts. The discovery of melamine in dairy exports such as chocolate and yogurt triggered a slew of product recalls overseas.

I am boring with all the email I received, boycott this and that. What this? How far can you go with all this boycott things. Do you realize that we still need to build our economy? Please la..we are at the edge of the Globalization era.
Please..open your mind and think. I am not supporting any of the Palestine nor the Israel , but the fact is we should blame the government of them. This is not a new issue. Well I knew the conflict since I was studied my Political Science 8 years ago. No one can solve this problem except their self. I am not going to elaborate all the issue again, you can find it in the internet.

I pity and sympathy with all the innocent peoples who killed in this conflict but I tell you, all the peoples at Palestine neither in Israel doesn't want to be treat like this. But what can they do. They are watching blood everywhere, crying and shouting every where. When do you think its will stop.

"God please give us peace, spread the loves to all nation in this world, throw the hatred feeling away, let us live in peace"..

I believe that everyone are still thinking how to reduce our fuel consumption. If you read the "New Straits times" on Sunday 8th June, I think you've seen the article. So don't waste you time to read it again, save your energy. But of course, if you want to understand more, you may read.

For those who hasn't read it, maybe you should read it, especially women driver, perhaps its help, who knows, no harm to try, isn't it?

Here are some tips recommended:

* Change gear in good time : What it means is that you do not over-rev or strain your engine in one gear. When Possible, short shift quickly to the tallest gear.

*Drive smoothly :avoid hard accelaration: Accelerating at traffic lights wastes fuel. Go light with you right foot.

* Avoid sudden braking : Look a few cars forward so that you can avoid hard braking. When you brake, you need more fuel to get up to speed again.

* Make sure your tyres are properly inflated: Under inflated tyres will cost more drag, not to mention dangerous road handling. Keep the tyres at the recommended pressure. Invest in a wireless tyre pressure monitor in your car.

* Avoid Carrying excess weight : Excess weight equals to heavy load, which needs more energy to push.

* Switch off your engine when it's not in use: If you are waiting for more than three minutes, kill the engine. You are saving the enviroment too.

* Keep your engine well-tuned and serviced: Dirty engine will work harder and drink more to give you the same amount of power.

* Avoid high speeds: Above 100km/h, fuel consumption will suffer and this applies to any car of any make.

* Plan Your journey: Do not wait until the amber light lights up to fill up. This will usually make you go out of the way to find a pump to fill up. Plan your route before starting the car. Better still, use a satelite navigation systems like Gophers to help you chart the shortest route. ( This one applied for those who has this technology).

"FITNA" the movie

As everyone know, this movie was out on Friday, 28th March 2008. Its about how violent muslim is. Well me, as a muslim believe that it is NOT our religon and the person who made the movie are not muslim. So, what they want actually is to make all the muslim angry and show their violent as what he show in the movie.

Just want to share a thought with you all muslims who read this post. Our religion NEVER teached us to be violent to other people and please if we feel offended with the movie, don't be so, because it is NOT us or our religion but we should tell those muslim people who did all the extremist and violent act, SHAME ON YOU!. It is all about their political interest and never think about other people.

Please think a while, if we show them that we are angry and do the most stupid thing like those people who demonstrate and trowing stone or any other violent acts, they really showing that muslim is violent. Those who did that are those who really extremist and mis-using of "Quran". I think the person who made the movie is laughing, looking at the news. YES! that really muslim, see how angry they are. Please open your mind and think again. Its not mean that we are not supporting our religion, BUT we are not agree and support those think they are muslim but made muslim bad in the eyes of the world.

I know how it feel when our religion being laughing by the whole nation in this world. But we must remember, we have to learn to be patient and control our anger. I am pity to Prophet Muhammad S.A.W, who has been teaching us all the good things but misunderstanding by other people. As everyone know, we are still human. Every human has their advantages and disadvantages. Let just pray to Allah that we can live peaceful in this world. Put aside the anger, strengthen our faith and be patient.

A Whole Life Lie

I get this story from my friend and i find it interesting story.. Read on then you know

He met her on a party. She was so outstanding, many guys chasing after her, while he so normal, nobody paid attention to him. At the end of the party, he invited her to have coffee with him, she was surprised, but due to being polite, she promised. They sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything, she felt uncomfortable, she thought, please, let me go home.... suddenly he asked the waiter. "Would you please give me some salt? I'd like to put it in my coffee."

Everybody stared at him, so strange! His face turned red, but still, he put the salt in his coffee and drank it. She asked him curiously; why you have this hobby? He replied: "When I was a little boy, I was living near the sea, I like playing in the sea, I could feel the taste of the sea, just like the taste of the salty coffee. Now every time I have the salty coffee, I always think of my childhood, think of my hometown, I miss my hometown so much, I miss my parents who are still living there". While saying that tears filled his eyes. She was deeply touched.

That's his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart. A man who can tell out his homesickness, he must be a man who loves home, cares about home, has responsibility of home. Then she also started to speak, spoke about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story.

They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who meets all her demands; he had tolerance, was kind hearted, warm, careful. He was such a good person but she almost missed him! Thanks to his salty coffee!

Then the story was just like every beautiful love story, the princess married to the prince, then they were living the happy life... And, every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee, as she knew that's the way he liked it.

After 40 years, he passed away, left her a letter which said: "My dearest, please forgive me, forgive my whole life lie. This was the only lie I said to you---the salty coffee. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous at that time, actually I wanted some sugar, but I said salt. It was hard for me to change so I just went ahead. I never thought that could be the start of our communication
I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid to do that, as I have promised not to lie to you for anything.

Now I'm dying, I afraid of nothing so I tell you the truth: I don't like the salty coffee, what a strange bad taste… But I have had the salty coffee for my whole life! Since I knew you, I never feel sorry for anything I do for you. Having you with me is my biggest happiness for my whole life. If I can live for the second time, still want to know you and have you for my whole life, even though I have to drink the salty coffee again".

Her tears made the letter totally wet. Someday, someone asked her: what's the taste of salty coffee? She replied, “It's sweet.”
